State Delegate and National Caucus of Environmental Legislators (NCEL) President James W. Hubbard selected to National Coalition

State Delegate James W. Hubbard (D-Bowie) has been selected to a national working group of state leaders working with the White House to advance federal clean energy legislation in Congress.  The group met for the first time in late September week via phone, and have since met twice at the White House with President Obama’s top advisors on energy and climate change policy.

“Maryland and the other 49 states represented by the over 800 like-minded legislators that comprise National Caucus of Environmental Legislators (NCEL) have shown real leadership building a cleaner, more energy efficient future,” said Delegate Hubbard.  “State legislators play a unique role in clean-energy jobs policies.  We’re elected representatives of the people, we know the businesses and labor issues in our states, and many of us see federal action as the launching pad for the next generation of innovation and prosperity through solidarity in America.”

Working with the White House, the National Coalition of State Leaders on Energy & Climate Change will help inform the debate surrounding the American Clean Energy and Security Act (HR 2454).  Their efforts will focus on moving the country toward clean energy solutions that will create jobs and reduce America’s reliance on foreign oil.

Maryland is uniquely positioned to contribute innovative ideas for nationwide clean energy policy reforms and is one of several states recognized as a model for the country’s new clean energy economy.  In 2006, the Health Air Act was enacted by the state and it provided the strongest state air emissions reduction act in country.

“Maryland has again taken the opportunity to lead,” said Delegate Hubbard.  “Our recent efforts at the state level and the progress we’ve made can serve as a model for the rest of the country as Congress takes needed action to build a prosperous economy and a more secure clean energy future.”

As President of NCEL, Delegate Hubbard will be participating in the working group along with 40 other state legislators from across the nation.
